Most South African small businesses should spend between R3 000 and R10 000 a month on Google Ads, paid directly to Google. Below about R2 000 a month there are usually too few clicks to learn what works. If you hire someone to manage your ads, expect a management fee of roughly R2 000 to R8 000 a month on top of your ad spend.

The right budget for you depends on what a click costs in your industry and what a new customer is worth. Here is how to work it out.

How much does a click cost on Google Ads in South Africa?

A Google Ads click in South Africa usually costs between R3 and R80, and more in legal, finance and insurance. You do not pay a fixed price. Google runs an auction every time someone searches, and the price depends on how many businesses want that search and how relevant your ad is. Published 2026 benchmarks for South Africa put typical click costs at:

Industry Typical cost per click
Restaurants and food R3 to R20
Online shops (retail) R5 to R30
Home services and trades R10 to R40
Web design and marketing R15 to R55
Healthcare and medical R20 to R70
Property R25 to R80
Insurance and finance R40 to R120
Legal services R45 to R150

How do I work out my Google Ads budget?

Work backwards from the number of enquiries you want. Use this simple formula:

Monthly budget = enquiries wanted × (cost per click ÷ conversion rate)

Example: a plumber wants 20 enquiries a month. Clicks cost about R25, and about 1 in 10 visitors (10%) calls or fills in a form. Each enquiry costs R25 ÷ 0.10 = R250. Twenty enquiries cost about R5 000 a month in ad spend.

Then check it against what a customer is worth. If half of those enquiries become jobs worth R2 500 each, R5 000 in ads brings in about R25 000 in work. That is a healthy return. If your average job is worth R300, Google Ads may not be the right channel, or you need to focus on repeat customers.

What is the minimum budget for Google Ads?

There is no official minimum, but around R2 000 to R3 000 a month is the practical floor for a small local campaign. With less, you may get only a few dozen clicks a month, which is not enough to know which keywords and ads work. As a rough guide:

  • Under R2 000 a month: very limited data. Better to focus on SEO and your Google Business Profile first.
  • R2 000 to R5 000: fine for testing in one town or suburb with a narrow set of services.
  • R5 000 to R10 000: meaningful results for most small businesses in one metro.
  • R10 000 to R25 000: competitive industries or wider areas, such as a whole province.

How much do Google Ads agencies charge in South Africa?

South African Google Ads management usually costs R2 000 to R8 000 a month for a small business, plus a once-off setup fee of R2 500 to R8 000. Agencies charge in one of two ways:

  • Flat monthly fee: a fixed amount regardless of spend. This is easier to budget and common for smaller accounts.
  • Percentage of ad spend: usually 10% to 20%, often with a minimum fee. This suits larger accounts.

Rusted Web charges a flat fee from R2 950 a month, with setup from R2 500 once-off, waived if you commit to six months. Your ad spend is billed by Google directly to your card, so you always see exactly what Google charges. See Google Ads management.

How can I stop wasting money on Google Ads?

Most wasted spend comes from showing ads for the wrong searches. These steps fix the biggest leaks:

  1. Use search campaigns first. Display and Performance Max campaigns can burn budget for small accounts. Start with people actively searching.
  2. Add negative keywords. Block searches like “jobs”, “free”, “DIY” and “course” if they do not bring customers.
  3. Target your real service area. Set a radius or list of towns, and choose “people in” your area rather than “people interested in” it.
  4. Track conversions. Measure calls, forms and WhatsApp clicks, otherwise you are guessing.
  5. Send clicks to a relevant page. A page about the exact service searched for converts far better than your home page.
  6. Schedule ads. If you cannot answer the phone at night, do not pay for night-time clicks.

Should I do Google Ads or SEO?

Do Google Ads if you need enquiries now, and SEO if you want free traffic that lasts. Google Ads can bring calls in the first week, but stops the day you stop paying. SEO takes about 1 to 3 months to show results, but keeps working. Many small businesses run both: ads to bring in work while SEO builds up, then reduce ad spend once organic rankings take over.

Frequently asked questions

Is R1 000 a month enough for Google Ads?

R1 000 a month is usually not enough to learn what works, except for very cheap, very local searches. At R20 a click, that is only 50 clicks a month. Consider starting with a free Google Business Profile and SEO instead.

Do I pay Google or the agency for ad spend?

With Rusted Web, you pay Google directly for ad spend using your own card, and pay us only the management fee. This keeps your account and data in your name.

How long before Google Ads bring results?

Ads can bring enquiries in the first week. The first 4 to 8 weeks are a learning period where keywords and ads are refined, and cost per enquiry usually drops after that.

Can I run Google Ads without a website?

You can promote a Google Business Profile or use call-only ads, but results are usually better with a fast landing page that matches the search. A good page lowers your cost per enquiry.
